We're looking for a Senior PHP Software Engineer to join a fast-growing tech scale-up based in Amsterdam. If you're passionate about building software where scalability, performance, and quality are at the core, this could be the opportunity for you.

You'll join an engineering team building a modern e-commerce platform operating across more than twenty European countries. Every day, the platform processes massive amounts of product data, maintains API integrations, and continuously evolves to support further international growth. This isn't an environment where you'll spend most of your time maintaining legacy code. Instead, you'll help build new solutions, shape the architecture, and contribute to the continued growth of the platform.

Job Description

As a Senior PHP Software Engineer, you'll work in a modern backend environment where performance, reliability, and scalability are at the heart of everything you build. Together with your colleagues, you'll develop new features, improve existing services, and help prepare the platform for further international expansion.

You'll be involved throughout the entire development process, from design to production, while actively contributing to software that remains scalable, maintainable, and future-proof.

Your responsibilities include:

• Developing new backend functionality using Laravel
• Designing and building scalable microservices
• Building and maintaining REST APIs
• Processing large volumes of product data
• Optimising application performance and database queries
• Contributing to software architecture and technical decision-making
• Participating in code reviews and knowledge sharing
• Improving code quality through testing and automation

You'll be working in a modern engineering environment where quality comes first. The backend is built with PHP 8+ and Laravel, following a microservices architecture where REST APIs, RabbitMQ, and event-driven communication play an important role.

Data is managed using MySQL, PostgreSQL, and OpenSearch, while the frontend is built with React and Inertia.js.

The engineering team also relies on modern tooling such as Docker, GitHub Actions, CI/CD, PHPUnit, and PHPStan to build, test, and deploy reliable software.

AI is also becoming an increasingly important part of the development workflow. Tools such as GitHub Copilot are actively used to automate repetitive tasks, improve code quality, and allow developers to focus on solving meaningful technical challenges.

You're someone who looks beyond simply writing code. You think about architecture, scalability, maintainability, and the technical decisions that ensure software remains easy to develop and maintain for years to come.

You enjoy technical discussions, like challenging ideas, and can clearly explain and justify the decisions you make.

Ideally, you have:

• Strong experience with PHP and Laravel
• A solid understanding of SOLID principles and object-oriented design
• Experience designing scalable and future-proof software
• Experience writing maintainable and well-tested code
• Knowledge of performance optimisation, databases, and scalability challenges
• Experience building REST APIs
• Familiarity with Docker and modern development workflows

Experience with microservices, high-traffic platforms, or event-driven architectures would be a strong advantage
